We appreciate the fact that many of our parents or carers wish to support their children’s learning at home. At Denmead Infant School we use the term home learning to describe activities which we provide for children to complete in partnership with adults or older siblings. This is not the same as the more traditional understanding of ‘homework’ which is a task that a child might be expected to complete by themselves. Below are some of the ways in which you can be involved- if you have any further questions please talk to your child’s class teacher.
Your child will always be given a reading and library book for them to share with you at home. The reading book will be appropriate to the level at which they are reading and we ask that you listen to your child read at least 4 times a week. Remember they do not have to read the whole book each time, just a page or two may be enough for one session and discussing the story and answering questions is just as important as reading aloud.
SEESAW Please encourage your child to record a clip of them reading and send it in to share and celebrate with their class teachers!
The library book allows your child to choose a book that interests them and so they may not be able to read it independently. This offers you the opportunity to read to your child and to talk about the book.
Please use your child’s yellow reading diary to record the books that you have read at home, with comments about the experience.
Year 1 children will be learning phonics in school each day. On a Friday the graphemes and common exception words that they have learnt that week will be shared with you on SEESAW as a video. On that day, your child will also bring home two copies of each grapheme and word so that you are able to support and consolidate their learning at home by playing SNAP, matching pairs, flashcards etc.
Year 2 children will be learning to spell common exception words in school each day. On a Friday, the words of the week will be shared with you on SEESAW so that you will be able to continue to support your child with independently spelling the words.
Please use the range of activities shared in the Spelling booklet on Seesaw e.g. spelling scribble, spelling triangles, word shapes, cut out letters, writing in sand etc. If your child can already confidently spell the words then please challenge them to write them in sentences. Please share your weekly spelling practise with your class teacher via Seesaw (it could be a video clip, photograph, piece of work etc.).
Every fortnight, your child will be set a piece of home learning on Seesaw. The objective of this home learning is for you to support your child’s maths or topic learning in a variety of ways. The expected outcome will be made clear in the setting of the task and we ask that you share this outcome with your child’s class teacher on SEESAW every fortnight.
Your child’s teacher will use Seesaw at incidental times throughout the year to share learning that has taken place, that your child would benefit with practising outside of the classroom e.g. telling the time, using money, seasonal observations, skipping etc. There is no expectation for you to share any response to these challenges on Seesaw.
Your child’s teacher will use Seesaw to share and celebrate your child’s efforts, work and achievements in school. This may be in the form of a video, a photograph or a copy of their work. We ask that you share this with your child and celebrate their achievement with them.
